The tribute to Geisha Mineko Iwasaki is inspired by Japan’s top geisha who earned her reputation as Japans finest dancer and apprentice in 1949. Iwasaki left home to begin training as a geisha at the age 5. She worked herself to her limit, both mentally and physically, eventually developing a kidney condition that nearly killed her. By age 21 she had earned a reputation as Japan's top Geisha. Later, Iwasaki became frustrated with the tradition-bound world of the Geisha, and unexpectedly retired at the height of her career. Iwasaki was one of several geisha author Arthur Golden interviewed while researching his novel Memoirs of a Geisha.
